When a Galveston, Texas fishing boat located 100NM offshore
was taking on water, the crew was preparing to abandon ship. While four P-1 portable pumps had been airlifted to the stricken vessel, only three were operating and could not handle the water flow. CGC Point Winslow arrived on the scene with another pump and in thirty minutes had all five pumps running to reverse impact of the water.

Initial problems with the fishing vessel started due to the rubber of the shaft packing melting around the shaft, causing water to spray into the fish hold and throughout the boat. The long term repair would require the F/V to be hauled out of the water once the boat was safely in port. The short term solution was to turn to Syntho-Glass. The instant repair resin coated cloth could patch the shaft packing.

Each Point Class Patrol Boat is required to include 10 (4"x15') and 20 (3"x9') Syntho-Glass® kits. The Syntho-Glass® is water activated and requires no mixing. The Syntho-Glass® was wrapped around the shaft log and shaft and set rock hard in minutes, even under pressure from around the shaft. Two additional Syntho-Glass® kits were placed over the first kit for strength.

The Syntho-Glass® proved to be a huge success, holding its seal tight on the vessel's shaft for the entire tow to port, saving the vessel from sinking and preventing harm from coming to the vessel's crew.
