BP Amoco was facing the task of contracting for the successfully cleaning
and wrapping of nine breasting dolphins, consisting of approximately seventy-two eighteen inch diameter vertical steel pilings. Approval was given for the application of Syntho-Glass® in the wetted zone of the docking facility as an alternative to pipe replacement.
The month-long project was a challenge for BP Amoco as the application of this new material was unlike anything they had attempted in the past. The petroleum giant considered the option, however as the replacement for breasting dolphins were priced at roughly $130,000 each, for a total repair of more than $1,000,000.
The project was successfully completed by three different contractors. Each faced significant problems with repair as pipe conditions and attention to the environment were important in the repair process. The application of Syntho-Glass® not only preserved the integrity of the pipeline, it protected the environment while also savings BP Amoco a significant amount of money.
